Digital Hub for refugees

For Refugees! ATC Uganda Opens A Free Digital Hub In Makindye

Exiting news for all refugees! ATC Uganda, in partnership with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), has launched an exciting initiative a Digital Community at Makindye Division Headquarters in Kampala. This program is a game-changer for refugees and underserved communities, providing free ICT training, resources, and opportunities to thrive in the digital era.

What is a Digital Community?

Imagine a welcoming space where computers, internet access, and skilled instructors are at your disposal for free! That’s exactly what a Digital Community is. It’s not just a facility; it’s a launchpad for people to learn vital ICT skills like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These skills are essential for employment, entrepreneurship, and navigating today’s tech-driven world.

Ms. Dorothy Ssemanda, CEO of ATC Uganda, shared the vision behind this initiative:
“Our Digital Community centres go beyond being computer labs. They are hubs for empowerment, designed to ensure that no one, especially those from underserved areas, is left behind in the digital age.”

Transforming Lives Through Partnerships

This initiative aligns with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the Digital Transformation Roadmap, underscoring the importance of collaboration. Public and private entities like ATC Uganda and KCCA have joined forces to create equitable opportunities for all, especially for refugees and those in underserved areas.

A Growing Network of Opportunity

Makindye’s new Digital Community isn’t an isolated effort. ATC Uganda has already established 42 Digital Communities across the country, demonstrating their commitment to bridging the digital divide.

Ms. Suzette Victor, Director of Sustainability at ATC Africa, highlighted the program’s broader vision:
“This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to build a more connected Africa. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come, and Makindye is just the beginning.”

Empowering Refugees and Underserved Communities

For refugees and others who often face barriers to technology, this initiative provides hope and opportunity. It offers a chance to learn, grow, and secure sustainable futures in Uganda’s ever-evolving digital landscape.

Makindye’s Digital Community is more than a centre it’s a lifeline for transformation, empowering residents to dream bigger and achieve more.
