Empowering Refugees In Uganda: Volunteer With Uganda Refugee Camp

Uganda, home to one of the largest Refugees populations in Africa, offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about creating a meaningful impact. World At Play, a UK-registered charity committed to enriching lives through sport and play, is calling for volunteers to join its transformative programme in Uganda’s refugee settlements.

Bringing Hope to Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement

Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, situated in south-west Uganda and managed by UNHCR, shelters approximately 78,000 refugees, primarily from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Strikingly, 68% of this population is under 18, yet education opportunities are scarce, with just 3% of young refugees accessing the settlement’s only secondary school.

World At Play seeks to bridge this gap by offering sport and developmental play sessions that provide joy and essential life skills such as confidence, teamwork, and social inclusion. These activities also promote harmony between refugees and host communities, fostering a sense of belonging and hope.

Be Part of the Change

Following the successful launch of its pilot project earlier this year, World At Play is recruiting new volunteers for its February 2020 cohort. With only six positions left, aspiring volunteers are encouraged to register quickly to secure their place.

Wendy Williams, Senior Manager at World At Play, emphasized:

“The children of Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement have faced immense challenges. Through play, we help them develop confidence, teamwork, and joy—critical elements in every child’s growth. Our volunteers gain life-changing experiences that shape their perspectives forever.”

Volunteer Testimonies: The Impact of Play

Jerry, a past World At Play volunteer and former refugee, shared his reflections:

“Having been displaced at 16, I understand the hardships these youths face. The games and activities we lead promote teamwork, peace, and strong communication. These are invaluable tools for building a resilient community.”
